This programme is suitable for registered dental care professionals who are working clinically, who wish to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills and prepares the dental nurse to become an oral health educator. It is ideal preparation for dental nurses planning to apply for dental hygiene and therapy.

Students undertaking the programme must complete a short online induction after which all learning will be carried out on our virtual e-learning platform.

Study is part guided and part self-directed and students have a maximum of 26-weeks to complete the programme.

This qualification is awarded by Dental Team Qualifications (DTQ). The DTQ assessments are all e-based assessments carried out in a controlled environment.

Students are required to maintain an activity log, and development plan, both of which are available within DTT’s e-learning environment.

The Certificate in Oral Health Education and Preventative Practice is aimed at all Registered Dental Care Professionals who would like to learn more about and deliver oral health advice, education and prevention.

All units are delivered online using our e-learning environment. Students are guided and supported by a Tutor/Mentor. Optional hands-on sessions at one of our centres, or in-house, are available on request. Please contact us for further information.

How is the qualification assessed?

The students’ knowledge, understanding and skills are assessed by the completion of a number of assessments on their virtual e-portfolio. These e-assessments take a variety of styles, which ensure that all units of study are assessed fairly and proportionately.

Students have three attempts at each e-assessment. The e-assessments are carried out in a controlled environment and submitted using the e-learning platform.

How long will the programme take?

Students are given up to 24-weeks to complete the study and then a further 2 weeks to complete and submit their e-assessments.

This equates to approximately 6-7 hours of study per week.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course dental nurses will be able to:

• Describe an up to date knowledge in Law, Ethics and Professionalism relating to oral health education and preventative practice
• Describe an up to date knowledge in Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Control and Medical Emergencies
• Critically reflect on dental public health and population level strategies and campaigns
• Describe skills in the management and delivery of oral health education and preventative practice, and the development of oral health promotion programmes for a range of groups of people
• Discuss the aetiology of dental disease and the principles of prevention
• Provide an insight into the scientific basis of oral health promotion and oral health education and to develop an understanding of the link between general health and oral health.
• Be proficient in the design and delivery of appropriate, individual oral health care plans to prevent and/or minimise the effects of oral disease.
• Provide comprehensive oral care using the most appropriate treatment modality.
• Empathise with patients and Describe the ability to communicate effectively with patients, parents, carers and colleagues, including (but not exclusively) relating to informed consent, Equality and Diversity, patient management techniques, checking medical history and the maintenance and recording of contemporaneous dental records
